He added that the technology will enable Pakistan to independently survey its natural resources, ultimately contributing to more efficient and sustainable resource management.
“Pakistan is not only assuming a leadership role among the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) but also making significant strides in space technology and satellite imaging,” Khan emphasized.
The workshop, which runs from September 22 to 26, includes participants from Iraq, Senegal, Libya, Türkiye, and Tunisia. It focuses on training experts in web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) development using open-source tools, aiming to equip them with the skills to integrate satellite data into practical applications across various sectors.
Dr. Muhammad Mansha, head of web application development at SUPARCO, highlighted the importance of open-source GIS technologies in today’s world. “This training enables professionals to develop applications that leverage satellite imagery for use in agriculture, environmental monitoring, and disaster management,” he said.
He expressed hope that such technologies would empower both researchers and policymakers to make informed, timely decisions based on reliable data.
SUPARCO officials remain optimistic that initiatives like this will not only strengthen Pakistan’s capabilities in space technology but also position the country as a regional leader and a model for emerging space programs.
