The sky over the Potomac blossomed with colorful bursts and streaks of light as America celebrated its 250th birthday late Saturday night with a massive fireworks display, creating a memorable spectacle around the national monuments for thousands who waited patiently through heat, storms, and rain for the celebration’s dazzling finale.
As waves of fireworks illuminated the sky above the “Salute to America” celebration, it seemed not merely lit but written across the night. Red, white, and blue cascades shimmered above the Lincoln Memorial, while golden willow effects drifted over the Reflecting Pool.
The fireworks followed President Donald Trump’s speech, which capped the Independence Day celebrations on the National Mall.

Washingtonians and visitors from across the country watched the weather shift from sweltering heat to thunderstorms and rain.

Temperatures climbed into the triple digits, leaving asphalt softening underfoot. The annual parade was canceled because of the extreme weather.
Families huddled in the shade of the Washington Monument, sweating through their shirts and fanning children with souvenir programs. Strangers shared bottles of water. For a few hours, the nation’s divisions seemed less pronounced as people endured the same oppressive conditions.
Then came the storm just when the day turned into evening.
It rolled in from the west, dark and sudden, scattering thousands across the Mall like leaves in the wind.
Organizers and law enforcement officials asked attendees to evacuate the event grounds and seek temporary shelter in nearby buildings.

When the clouds finally parted and the humidity eased, the air carried the scent of wet grass and rain.
The crowd gradually returned to the Mall, where the long-awaited fireworks transformed an exhausting day into a night of celebration with light.
