President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Iran has released an American citizen, Dena Karari, who had been barred from leaving the country since late 2024.
President Trump shared the news directly on his Truth Social platform. “Iran has allowed an American Citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024 under the ‘presidency’ of Sleepy Joe Biden, to leave the Country,” he wrote.
“She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition. The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran.”
According to New York Post The president’s comments come as American forces have struck Iranian targets and Tehran has responded with attacks on U.S. military bases in the region. These exchanges persist despite a Pakistani-mediated framework agreement aimed at a lasting settlement, particularly over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The Woman at the Center: Dena Karari
According to NBC News Human rights attorney Jared Genser identified the released American as Dena Karari, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen. Karari had been prevented from departing Iran since December 2024.
Her case remained largely out of the public eye until Wednesday. According to Genser, Karari traveled to Iran to visit family. When she attempted to leave at the airport, authorities seized her American and Iranian passports. She faced dozens of interrogations and what Genser described as “a coercive exit ban.”
Philanthropy and the Alleged Targeting
Genser told CNN that Karari operated a non-profit called the Children of Mehr Foundation. The organization provided support to impoverished children in Iran using private donor funds and with authorization under a U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) license.
He indicated this work appeared linked to the restrictions placed on her. In April, for reasons that remain unclear, Karari’s exit ban expired and her passports were returned, Genser said.
Path to Freedom Amid Diplomatic Talks
According to Fox News As U.S.-Iran negotiations advanced on a memorandum of understanding (MOU), Genser and his team urgently contacted the White House and negotiators to advocate for Karari’s case. It is his understanding that her situation was raised during those talks.
“Ultimately, earlier today, she’s able to get across the border” and leave Iran, Genser reported. He confirmed that Karari is heading back to the United States and is in good condition.
Praise for the Trump Administration
Genser praised the Trump administration’s efforts.
“They were doing everything they can and pushing from every direction they could,” he told CNN.
CNN reached out to the White House and the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs for additional details on the circumstances of her release, but the president did not provide further information in his public statement.
