A landmark transatlantic technology partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States was unveiled Wednesday during President Donald Trump‘s official visit to Britain, setting the stage for a new era of cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and nuclear technologies. At the heart of the announcement is the launch of a UK government-backed AI Growth Zone in Northeast England—set to generate over 5,000 skilled jobs and attract up to £30 billion in private investment, with key contributions from both British and American tech giants. US-UK tech pact

Foreign and Commonwealth Office announced that major American players OpenAI and NVIDIA are partnering with UK-based firm Nscale to launch Stargate UK, a project to deploy sovereign AI infrastructure on British soil, starting in the North East.

Meanwhile, according to Reuters, Microsoft will invest 22 billion pounds in total to expand cloud and AI infrastructure as well as in the supercomputer. The facilities will be established in in Loughton, north-east London. US-UK tech pact

As per the announcement, AI Growth Zone to be based around Blyth and Cobalt Park, positioning the region will be one of Europe’s largest data centre hubs.

The project draws support from leading UK universities including Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, and Northumbria, enhancing local training in AI and data science.

The partnership comes as both governments champion innovation-led economic growth, with a focus on clean energy, public service transformation, and digital sovereignty.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang called the deal a “historic chapter in U.S.-UK technology collaboration,” highlighting the UK’s “Goldilocks position” for AI leadership. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the potential to “expand opportunity for people and businesses across the UK.”

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall praised the move as “great news for the North East,” saying it would “unlock £30 billion in investment and inspire the UK’s next industrial revolution.”

Local leaders, including North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, emphasized how the project will benefit communities directly, by creating training, apprenticeship opportunities, and long-term career paths in the AI sector.

This sweeping investment underlines the UK’s ambition to become a global AI powerhouse and showcases how US-UK collaboration is playing a pivotal role in reshaping the global tech landscape.
