Governor Glenn Youngkin has appointed Pakistani American author, journalist and community advocate, Nuzaira Azam to the Virginia Council on Women.
Ms. Azam was officially sworn in on Tuesday, August 26, at the historic Virginia State Capitol by Secretary of the Commonwealth Kelly Gee.
“It feels so great to be able to add my voice to the Council’s work,” Ms. Azam told Views News Now after taking oath as member of the Council on the Qur’an.
The Virginia Council on Women serves to advise the Governor on issues of importance to women, with a focus on promoting educational, professional, cultural, and civic opportunities for women and girls across the Commonwealth.
Nuzaira Azam said her appointment will also inspire women in the Pakistani American community to take part in civic work meaningfully.
A resident of Herndon, Virginia, Ms. Azam brings decades of experience in journalism and civic leadership to the Council. She is the founder and president of The Global Beat Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to fostering dialogue, leadership, and community engagement. The Foundation offers seminars, workshops, and youth forums that address contemporary issues, with a particular focus on women’s empowerment and leadership development. It also provides specialized training for journalists, emphasizing support for women in media.
Azam’s appointment underscores her long-standing dedication to elevating voices in underserved communities and championing gender equity in public discourse, an official statement said.
“It is an honor to serve on the Virginia Council on Women,” said Azam. “I look forward to contributing to efforts that uplift women and youth across our state.
Her husband Zafar Iqbal was on her said as the took oath.
Meanwhile, prominent Pakistani American entrepreneur Muhammad Nasimuddin Mirza, author of American Dream Now and Forever, has congratulated Ms. Nuzaira Azam on her appointment to the important forum, saying her dynamic presence on the Council would be a matter of pride for the community.
The Virginia Council on Women is an advisory council to the Governor of Virginia. It works to identify ways in which the state can better support and advance the role of women in civic, professional, and personal spheres.
