Trump to host Pakistan prime minister at White House in sign of expanding relations

U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are expected to discuss enhancing U.S.-Pakistan relations in wide-ranging areas at a White House meeting on Thursday, multiple sources confirmed Wednesday. 

Official sources told Views News Now that the meeting that the two leaders will meet amid expanding cooperation between the two nations.

The two met briefly during the UN General Assembly session in New York on Tuesday, when President Trump hosted a meeting with leaders of Muslim countries on ending the Gaza war.

Separately, a Trump Administration official told Reuters Washington is working is working with Pakistan on counterterrorism, economic and trade issues.

 

 

The U.S. “president remains focused on advancing U.S. interests in the region, that includes through engaging with Pakistan and their government leaders,” the official said, according to the news service.

Meanwhile, Pakistani media reports suggest that Army Chief Field Marshal Gen Asim Munir is also expected to join the meeting.

Asim Munir last met President Trump at the White House in June following the U.S. leader’s intervention in India-Pakistan conflict in May.

The United States recently hailed Pakistan as a “phenomenal counterterrorism partner.”

Washington and Islamabad also were able to strike a trade deal within the timeframe set by President Trump on introduction of reciprocal tariffs before August 1.
