President Donald Trump said Friday he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska, as the United States steps up the latest effort for a ceasefire between Mosco and Ukraine to end the three-year-old war.

“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,” he wrote on his Truth Social site.    Alaska

Trump suggested that this meeting with Putin would likely occur before any discussions involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.    Alaska

If realized, the summit would mark the first direct engagement between U.S. and Russian leaders since 2021, when former President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.    Alaska

The meeting could represent a significant step in Trump’s efforts to broker an end to the conflict, though resolution remains uncertain given ongoing disparities between Moscow and Kyiv’s conditions for peace.    Alaska

Trump sounded optimistic, saying, “President Putin, I believe, wants to see peace, and Zelenskyy wants to see peace.” He acknowledged that Zelenskyy’s needs were being addressed, contingent upon tangible progress at the summit.

Regarding potential terms for a peace settlement, Trump alluded to the possibility of “swapping of territories” between Ukraine and Russia, though he offered no specific details.

He explained, “We’re looking to get some back and some swapping. It’s complicated.” He added, “Nothing easy. But we’re gonna get some back. We’re gonna get some switched. There’ll be some swapping of territories, to the betterment of both.”

At the same time, Trump noted that “President Putin, I believe, wants to see peace, and Zelenskyy wants to see peace.”    Alaska
