U.S. President Donald Trump may meet Russian and Ukrainian presidents next week, The New York Times reported after special envoy, Steve Witkoff had an hours long meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. peace
Citing two persons familiar with President Trump’s plan, the Times reported that U.S. leader shared his plans in a call with European allies. peace
The meetings with Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky would include only those three men, and would not include any European counterparts, according to the persons cited in the report.
“Afterwards, I updated some of our European Allies,” Mr. Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. peace
“Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
U.S. Special Enovy Witkoff met Putin ahead of this Friday’s deadline that President Trump has set for Russia to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine.
Earlier, Wednesday Trump called Russia an extraordinary threat to the United States.
He has also been pressuring India with rankling tariffs to choke off financial lifeline for Moscow that fuels its war in Ukraine.
In the early months of his presidency, Trump hosted Ukrainian President Zelinsky and also spoke to Russian President Putin to make a push for peace, but the war has lingered on this summer.
