Americans’ views about immigration – a key focus of President Donald Trump‘s agenda – have grown positive with nearly 80% of adults acknowledging it as a good thing for the country, a latest survey reveals.
A new Gallup survey finds that a record-high 79% of U.S. adults rate immigration as a good thing for the country while the share of people wanting immigration reduced has dropped from 55% in 2024 to 30% today.
On the other side of the spectrum, about 2 in 10 American adults say immigration is a bad thing right now, marking a downturn in ratio of such views from 32% last year.
These shifts in people’s views reverse a four-year trend of rising concern about immigration that began in 2021 with the inception of former President Joe Biden’s administration.

Significantly, the shift reflects changes among all major party groups, according to the survey.
Conducted between June 2-26, the Gallup poll of 1,402 U.S. adults included oversamples of Hispanic and Black Americans weighted to match national demographics.
“With illegal border crossings down sharply this year, fewer Americans than in June 2024 back hardline border enforcement measures, while more favor offering pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in the U.S.,” a Gallup news blog noted.
A jump in the U.S. adults favoring immigration this year from 64% a year ago, denotes a high point in the trend in a quarter of a century.
Gallup says during Democratic President Biden’s four years in office, negative views of immigration had increased substantially, peaking in the months before Republican President Trump began his second White House term.
According to Gallup nearly two-thirds of Republicans say immigrants are “a good thing” for the country. These views represent a 39% increase from the last year.

Among independents 80% hold that positive view about immigrants. Democrats continue to view immigration positively in overwhelming numbers.
According to the poll findings, 35 percent approve of the current Administration’s handling of the issue, including 21% strongly approving, while 62% disapprove, including 45% strongly.
However, these views continue to differ along party lines.
A big 85% majority of Republicans approves of President Trump’s handling of immigration, compared with 28% of independents and just 2% of Democrats.
By nearly the same margin 81% of Democrats strongly disapprove the approach.
Among Republicans, 59% strongly approve of the current handling of immigration.
Besides, the Gallup survey illustrates that more Americans now favor offering undocumented immigrants pathways to citizenship, while fewer support stringent measures to deter or reverse illegal immigration.
Regarding efforts to stop illegal immigration into the country, support for increasing the number of Border Patrol agents has declined 17 points to 59%, from 76% a year ago.
The opinion poll also found that backing for expanding the U.S.-Mexico border wall has dropped eight points to 45%.
“This likely reflects people perceiving these measures as less necessary given the sharp drop in illegal border crossings,” Gallup said.
Other recent surveys have found people had split views on the current approach to immigration along party lines, reflecting an evolving mix of views.

A Pew Research Center survey of 5,044 U.S. adults, conducted June 2-8, 2025, found that the Trump administration’s overall approach to immigration is viewed more negatively than positively, with 42% approving and 47% disapproving.
But these evaluations – and views of specific policies – largely split along partisan lines, with Republicans broadly supportive and Democrats opposed, Pew Research Center said.
According to the survey 78% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents approved of the administration’s approach to immigration, including 51% who strongly approve while just 12% disapproved it.
Contrastingly, a big majority, 81%, of Democrats and Democratic leaners disapproved the approach, with 63% strongly disapproving it. Among Democrats, 9% Americans approved the immigration approach.
