U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said Thursday that American forces carried out a large-scale wave of airstrikes against Iranian military targets, in retaliation for an attempted ballistic missile attack on U.S. personnel stationed in the Middle East.
The strikes follow President Donald Trump’s statement on Wednesday that the U.S. would strike Iran “very hard” for its attempted attack on U.S. military base in Jordan.
The strikes, which commenced at 10 p.m. ET on July 29, targeted dozens of facilities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including command centers, missile and drone production sites, coastal defense installations, and maritime operations hubs.
According to CENTCOM, the operation was designed to “further diminish threats” posed by Tehran and its proxy forces to American troops, regional shipping lanes, and allied Gulf nations.
The U.S. military action came just over 24 hours after IRGC forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iranian territory in what CENTCOM described as an “attempted surprise attack” on American bases across the region.
All incoming missiles were successfully intercepted by U.S. defense systems, with no reported casualties or damage to American assets.
With more than 50,000 U.S. service members currently deployed throughout the Middle East, CENTCOM emphasized that American forces remain “highly vigilant, focused, lethal, and ready” to respond to any further aggression.
