Ahead of his prime-time address Wednesday night, President Donald Trump said Iran’s president has approached the United States seeking a ceasefire, but indicated Washington would only consider the request if the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened.
The strait must be “open, free, and clear” before any pause in hostilities can be considered, Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
“Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!” he added, underscoring the administration’s continued military pressure.
The remarks came hours before Trump was scheduled to deliver an address to the nation at 9 p.m. ET, where he is expected to provide what the White House described as an “important update on Iran.”

Trump’s latest post also appears to reaffirm the administration’s position that a regime change has already taken place.
On Tuesday, he described the Iranian leadership as “more reasonable” and said Washington was engaged in “serious discussions” toward winding down the war.
He also suggested in a series of interviews that the United States might end the conflict before reopening the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, much of it bound for Asian economies.

The conflict, which began on February 28 with coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes, has triggered significant volatility in global energy markets and disrupted supply chains. Much of the instability has been linked to Iran’s ability to effectively block the strait, as well as Tehran’s retaliatory strikes on oil and gas infrastructure across energy-rich Gulf states.
While Trump and senior officials maintain that Iran’s military capabilities have been severely degraded and U.S. objectives are being met, the continued closure of the strait remains a central challenge in efforts to bring the conflict to an end.
