In a social media update ahead of his news conference, Trump declared that the capital would be “LIBERATED today,” insisting on ending “days of ruthlessly killing, or hurting, innocent people.”
Trump stated that National Guard soldiers would be present throughout Washington, D.C., and that the Metropolitan Police Department would now be led by a federal team.
He described this federal team as “very good people but they’re tough,” underscoring his determination to restore order.
The move faces objections from local officials, notably in light of recent data showing a sharp decline in violent crime. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, violent crime in Washington reached a 30-year low last year.
