U.S. President Donald Trump Thursday hosted a meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Oval Office, also attended by Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Vice President J D Vance.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also attending the meeting, expected to have focused on cementing U.S.-Pakistan relationship.
Shehabaz Sharif is the first Pakistani civilian leader to have a White House meeting with the U.S. president since 2019, when former prime minister Imran Khan.
Sharif and Trump also met briefly at a summit Trump hosted for leaders of Islamic countries at the UNGA in New York on Tuesday.
Ahead of the Oval Office meeting, President Trump noted that a “great leader” was coming to the White House.
“We’ve got the prime minister of Pakistan coming and the field marshal … [he’s] a great great guy and so is the prime minister, both,” he told White House correspondents.
