The curtain has fallen on the most storied international career football has ever seen. Cristiano Ronaldo, the man who carried a nation’s dreams on his shoulders for more than two decades, announced on Thursday that he is retiring from the Portugal national team.
At 41, the Al-Nassr forward confirmed he would “hand back the number 7 shirt” after the November international break—a symbolic gesture that closes one of the most decorated chapters in the history of the sport.
Beyond the trophies and records that crowned his unique talents, Ronaldo won over the hearts of millions of football followers worldwide through his warmth toward those who idolized him.
Whether signing autographs for fans who had waited hours in line or sharing a moment with a child in the crowd, he endeared himself to young and old alike—a reminder that true greatness is measured not only in silverware, but in the lives touched along the way.

A Decision Made with Head and Heart
In an emotional video message that will resonate with millions across the globe, Ronaldo reflected on a 23-year journey that began with his debut in August 2003. The boy from Madeira who became a legend did not hide his emotion. “It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart,” he said.
He thanked his family, the Portuguese people, his teammates, coaches, and staff—those who stood beside him through triumph and adversity alike. “If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it.” He closed with a simple, poignant caption: “Portugal will always be a part of me.”
In a longer statement, Ronaldo offered a reflection befitting a man who has transcended sport: “I spent my life working to become the best player in the world. Today I realise that my greatest victory was having deserved the honour of representing the best country in the world.”

Record-Breaking Numbers and Major Trophies
Ronaldo departs with statistics that may never be matched. He made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals—holding the all-time records for both international caps and international goals. He captained his country to its first major trophy at Euro 2016, and contributed to Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025, cementing his legacy as the defining figure of Portuguese football.
His final major tournament was the 2026 World Cup, where Portugal exited in the last 16 after a 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Spain. That appearance made him one of only two players—alongside Argentina’s Lionel Messi—to feature at six global tournaments, a testament to his extraordinary longevity at the highest level.

It’s been scientifically proven.
Cristiano Ronaldo jumped almost 4 metres off the ground, no one does it like him.

Recent Tensions with the National Team
The retirement follows a public falling-out with manager Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo left the Portugal camp at the end of September without permission ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark. He later cited broken promises from Jesus as the reason. Jesus denied any such agreement but left the door open for a return after Portugal’s 2-1 win.
After Ronaldo apologized and said he remained available for selection, the Portuguese Football Federation suspended him for 30 days and fined him €255 (approximately $287). His last appearance came on September 24 in a 1-0 win over Wales.
Portugal, currently top of Nations League Group A4, host second-placed Denmark on November 14 in Braga and then visit Wales. Those matches will now proceed without Ronaldo.

Federation Pays Tribute
The Portuguese Football Federation released a statement expressing “profound and eternal gratitude” for Ronaldo’s service.
“More than an exceptional athlete, our captain was an inspiring leader, an example of dedication and the ultimate symbol of the soul of our National Team,” the federation said.
The end of a generation that made millions of us fall in love with. 🥹

Officials indicated plans for a formal tribute so fans and the country can celebrate his contributions.
Ronaldo departs as Portugal’s most successful player in terms of individual and team honors and as a cultural reference point for the nation worldwide. While his international chapter ends, he continues at club level with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
