Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has condemned rhetoric targeting Muslims because of their faith, saying he is tired of people denigrating followers of Islam.
“I’m tired of people denigrating Muslims for being Muslims,” Clinton said.
Clinton made these remarks during an appearance with Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly at an interfaith event in Hollywood, Florida.
His remarks came amid a heated midterm campaign in which some Republicans have targeted Muslim candidate by associating them with extremist ideology.
The former Democratic president said wrongdoing is not exclusive to any one religion.
“There are bad actors in every faith because we’re all flawed human beings,” he said.

He also invoked a passage from the Qur’an emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding among people of different backgrounds and beliefs.
Clinton said he first encountered the passage through his daughter, who read the Qur’an from beginning to end when she was 15.
“The Quran says, and I first heard this from my daughter, who read the Quran from start to finish when she was 15 years old, and she said, ‘Read this,’” Clinton said.
“Allah put the different people on the earth not that they might despise one another, but that they might come to know one another and learn from one another,” he added, quoting the passage.
“But the religious wars, the culture wars, I’m just tired,” Clinton said.
