Imran Khan’s sisters protest his solitary confinement as concerns grow about his health

Imran Khan’s sisters protest

Former prime minister Imran Khan’s sisters and supporters protested outside Adiala jail Wednesday evening as Pakistani authorities continued to defy court orders to allow a meeting with his relatives.

His party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Pakistan said it has been more than three weeks that nobody has seen the Khan, the party’s founder and the 1992 world cup winning cricket captain.

The politician has been jailed for more than two years on what his party calls dubious corruption charges against him.

A sizeable crowd gathered outside the jail in Pakistan’s garrison city – the center of powerful military establishment – and demanded access to Khan amid suspicions about his health in the lingering solitary confinement.

Khan was dislodged from the prime ministerial position following a parliamentary vote that pro-democracy supporters say was orchestrated by the military establishment.

The current government is made up of Imran Khan’s political rivals, who came to power in February 2024 elections, widely recorded as heavily rigged in their favor.

The accounts provided by Khan’s sisters paint a picture of the government’s violation of court orders. Just days ago, his sister, Noreen Khan, said she was subjected to severe mistreatment outside the jail during a sit-in protest.
She said she was violently dragged and thrown onto the street while she stood there peacefully, seeking to meet her brother.
Khan’s supporters say the sisters have become symbol of resistance.
On Wednesday, the sisters were scheduled to meet the incarcerated brother but again they were denied the right. The sisters and PTI workers endured an excruciating wait as the day turned into evening and past midnight to 12:30 AM in the biting cold.
Some PTI leaders claim that the government is deny Imran Khan a meeting with his relatives at the behest of military establishment. The Pakistan military denies any interference in the political affairs.

The story is being updated.
