Imran Khan being kept incommunicado

Pakistan Thursday confirmed that former prime minister Imran Khan – now incarcerated since August 2023 – underwent a medical procedure for an eye ailment in Islamabad.

Khan, leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has been imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail in a graft case on dubious corruption charges.

He was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad for a “20-minute” medical procedure on January 24.

Information Minister Atan Tarar, who represents the political party that has been in power since Khan’s ouster for over two years, said on doctors’ advice Imran Khan was taken to PIMS hospital for a small medical process.

“Last Saturday night, he was taken to PIMS on the recommendation of these eye doctors and experts,” Tarar said.

According to the minister, Imran Khan’s “eyes were further examined, and after his written approval, a 20-minute medical procedure was performed.”

The ex-premier was then taken back to the Adiala jail with “important instructions.”

“During the medical procedure, his vitals and everything were stable. He’s absolutely healthy,” Tarar claimed.

Imran Khan’s party PTI earlier said the politician had been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in his right eye, “resulting in a dangerous blockage in the retinal vein.”

The party said the ailment warranted immediate treatment.

The party has also revived effort to meet Khan, who has been denied a meeting with relatives despite Court orders.
