A coalition of Democratic lawmakers is challenging the long-standing U.S. policy of silence surrounding Israel’s suspected nuclear arsenal, arguing that the escalating confrontation with Iran has made continued ambiguity increasingly untenable.
In a letter sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, 30 members of Congress demanded greater clarity from the administration on Israel’s nuclear infrastructure, strategic doctrine and enrichment capacity, saying lawmakers have not been adequately briefed on the risks of escalation in the Middle East.
The initiative was spearheaded by Texas Representative Joaquin Castro and comes as President Donald Trump continues to frame the crisis with Iran around Washington’s insistence that Tehran abandon nuclear enrichment as part of any future settlement.
The lawmakers argued that the United States cannot credibly pursue a regional nonproliferation strategy while avoiding public discussion of Israel’s own nuclear posture.
“Congress has a constitutional responsibility to be fully informed about the nuclear balance in the Middle East,” the lawmakers wrote, warning that the administration has not sufficiently explained contingency planning or escalation risks linked to the ongoing conflict.
For nearly six decades the U.S. has voluntarily remained in the dark on Israel’s nuclear capabilities.
The ambiguity ends now.

Although Israel has never officially acknowledged possessing nuclear weapons, experts and international monitoring organizations have for decades assessed that the country maintains a significant undeclared nuclear capability. Israeli governments have consistently adhered to a policy of deliberate ambiguity, avoiding both confirmation and denial.
The lawmakers said that approach now risks undermining U.S. credibility across the region, particularly as Washington intensifies pressure on Iran over its nuclear activities.
In the letter, members requested specific information regarding Israel’s suspected warheads, delivery systems and fissile material production, including details related to the Negev Nuclear Research Center near Dimona, widely viewed as the centerpiece of Israel’s nuclear program.
