In a momentous development, Saudi Arabia signed a defense pact with Pakistan for mutual cooperation, emphatically declaring that that any attack on either nation would be treated as an act of aggression against both.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the pact named as “Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement” in Riyadh.
A joint statement said “this agreement, which reflects the shared commitment of both nations to enhance their security and to achieving security and peace in the region and the world, aims to develop aspects of defense cooperation between the two countries and strengthen joint deterrence against any aggression.

“The agreement states that any aggression against either country shall be considered an aggression against both,” the statement said.
The energy-rich Saudi Arabia, a central pillar of Islamic world, and Pakistan, a nuclear power with a strong military, have built a close relationship over the past several decades.
The Pakistani PM’s office said the agreement was signed “on the basis of the “historic partnership extending for nearly eight decades … based on the bonds of brotherhood and Islamic solidarity.

A statement said the two countries have “shared strategic interests and close defense cooperation.”
The two sides and their delegations reviewed the historic and strategic relations between both countries, along with a number of topics of common interest.

The Saudi crown prince accorded a warm welcome to the Pakistani leader as the region faced uncertainty and instability amid ongoing Gaza war and Israeli attacks on several Middle Eastern countries.
Besides regional instability, the world is also witnessing global changes as countries including China, India, Brazil and Russia seek to strengthen alliances in the form of BRICS and SCO.
